European Spice Association

ESA represents national associations within the European seasoning and spice trade whose membership are involved in the processing, marketing, distribution and trading of herbs, spices and seasoning mixes.

Objectives

  • Promote & Protect the Interests of its Membership

  • To be the Leading Organisation of the European Seasoning & Spice industry

  • Ensure Members are Fully Aware of all Current & Future Legislation

  • Act as Central Medium of Communication with the EU Commission, European Parliament & CIAA (Confederation of the Food and Drink Industries of the EU)

  • Strengthen Links with Worldwide Spice Trade Associations & NGOs (Non-Government Organisations) including the American Spice Trade Association (ASTA)/International Organisation of Spice Trade Associations (IOSTA)/Indian Spices Board/Codex Alimentarius /International Standards Organisation (ISO)

  • Increase Membership

ESA Structure

ESA is formed of 3 key areas:

  • General Assembly

  • Technical Committee

  • Secretariat

The General Assembly

  • Comprises of Senior Management from each National Association

  • Policy Making Body & Strategy Development

  • Responsible for General Management of the Association

  • The General Assembly Convenes every 12 months

The Technical Committee

  • Comprises of Senior Technical Experts

  • Addresses Current Issues of Concern

  • Liaises closely with EU Commission, ISO & CIAA

  • Collects & Analyses Technical Data to Establish Trends and their Significance

  • Participates in Research Activities

Secretariat

  • Based at the German Spice Association

  • Co-ordinates & Administers the Business of the Association

  • Maintains & Promotes Links with Worldwide Spice Trade Organisations

  • Provides Representation at Meetings with EU Commission, European Parliament, ISO, Codex & CIAA

Core ESA Issues

  • Development of ESA Quality Minima

  • Monitor the BAPs (Biologically Active Principles)and Flavourings developments

  • Follow the Legislation of the EU Commission on Ochratoxin A

  • Alert Membership regarding Alflatoxins & Sudan 1-1V Dyes

  • Working with all the relevant authorities regarding MRLs (Maximum Residue Levels for Pesticides) in spices

  • Increase Membership within the New EU Countries

  • International Communication
